Lady Angels repeat as 'Regions' champion
Rylie Lyon scored a game-high 17 points and sisters Sharon and Anna Hansen both added double-digit performances on Friday and led the Bristol Bay Lady Angels to a 57-49 come-from-behind victory over the Metlakatla Miss Chiefs in the finals of the 2016 Rally the Regions Hardwood Classic basketball tournament.
Metlakatla didn't make the win easy. The Miss Chiefs opened the game with a 10-2 run in the first few minutes of the contest and looked prime to end the Lady Angels' efforts to repeat as the tournament champions.
Fortunately for Bristol Bay, the Lady Angels regrouped. The team went on a late run in the first quarter, scoring a 9-0 run in the closing minutes that enabled them to take an 11-10 lead into the second.
Metlakatla never recovered from that blow.
The Class 2A state runner-up a year ago, Bristol Bay salted away the win by outscoring the Miss Chiefs by a 46-39 clip over the final three quarters of play.
The Lady Angels were never really challenged in the tournament. They kicked off the action on Tuesday with a 65-50 victory over Aniak. From there, they downed Unalaska by a 64-17 clip and then handed Petersburg a 55-28 setback on Thursday.
The win over Petersburg was a special win for the Lady Angels. Petersburg defeated Bristol Bay in the state finals in March.
Anna Hansen led all BBHS scorers against Petersburg with 20 points. Lyon added 19.
The Unalaska Lady Raiders, backed by a strong tournament performance from Kayla Villamor and Alexis Magalong, also did well in the tournament. The Lady Raiders went 1-3 in the event, including a 31-25 victory over Cordova on the third day of play.
In the win over Cordova, Villamor pushed home a team-high 11 points.
Unalaska turned in a strong effort in a 55-51 loss to Aniak on Friday. In the contest, Magalong tallied 22 points, while Villmor added 19.
